May is sun cancer awareness month. So, do you know how the UV rays effect our skin?
The sun is our best friend on planet earth – without it we simply would not exist, yet it is also the direct cause of around 90% of the world’s most common cancer!
UVB rays reach the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) – they are known as ‘burning rays’ and are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UVB is stronger between 10 am and 4 pm, during the summer months, closer to the equator and does not go through most glass and plastic.
UVA rays penetrate the middle layer of the skin, (the dermis) they also contribute to skin damage and skin cancer and are also responsible for around 80% of the visible signs of premature ageing. UVA is the same strength all year round, all day long, at all locations between the poles, it can penetrate cloud cover and easily goes through most glass and plastic.
What Can You Do?
It’s a common misconception that you only need sunscreen for sunny days outside. UVA rays can penetrate glass therefore increasing the risk of skin cancer, ageing, pigmentation marks and leathering textured skin if you sit by a window or lots of glass. You need SPF on everyday, whatever the weather. Slather it on after moisturising and reapply as recommended.
No matter what our skin type, even if we tan, or rarely or never burn, the simple fact that our skin has changed colour is a sign of damage. Cumulative sun exposure is the main cause of non-melanoma skin cancers, while sunburn plays a clear role in the development of melanoma.
